My Experience at King’s Bangkok: A Perspective from Erika – An Exchange Student at King’s Bangkok

From the moment Erika Hamada arrived in Thailand, she was drawn to the vibrant energy of Bangkok—and her time at King’s Bangkok has been just as colourful, meaningful, and full of discovery. As a student from Keio Shonan Fujisawa Junior School in Japan, Erika joined us through our exchange programme, eager to try new things and broaden her horizons.

“I chose King’s Bangkok because of the wide range of extracurricular activities,” she said. “I wanted to expand my horizons, and this school gave me the perfect chance.”

A Welcoming Start

Erika’s first impression of King’s Bangkok was one of wonder and warmth. “The campus was so large, with so many facilities,” she said. “Everyone was kind and welcoming.” She quickly settled in and found herself drawn to the teaching approach—one that values every student’s voice, encourages hands-on learning, and fosters a sense of collaboration and creativity.

Among her favourite experiences were the drama lessons, where she worked closely with friends to create performances full of fun and memories. She also enjoyed learning chemistry with the support of a teacher who made lessons clear and approachable, even as she adjusted to using English daily.

A  Rewarding School Life

Whether playing netball for House Maclear, exploring the Senior School library, or discovering the hidden magic of the black box theatre, Erika immersed herself in all that King’s Bangkok had to offer. She loved the school’s vibrant community spirit—especially during events like International Day and Busking Week—and found joy in trying new things, from guitar in CCA to group geography projects on a school trip to Chiang Mai.

“That nine-hour mountain climb was tough,” Erika shared, “but it gave us such a sense of achievement. I’ll never forget it.”

A True Cultural Exchange

Her experience extended beyond the classroom. During her time in Thailand, she stayed with host families—both Thai and Japanese-English—giving her a glimpse into different ways of life, food, and traditions. From learning Thai phrases like “mai bpen rai” to sharing Japanese food with her new friends, Erika embraced cultural exchange with openness.

“Pad Thai and Palo became my favourite Thai dishes,” she said. “And I introduced my friends to Japanese food—they loved it!”

Erika also reflected on the small but meaningful cultural differences she noticed. “In Japan, we bow to show gratitude; in Thailand, people bring their hands together and give a slight bow. It’s really beautiful.”

“ผัดไทยและพะโล้กลายเป็นเมนูอาหารไทยที่หนูชอบที่สุดเลยค่ะ” เธอกล่าว “และหนูก็แนะนำอาหารญี่ปุ่นให้เพื่อน ๆ รู้จัก—พวกเขาชอบมากเลย!”

Memories That Last

Reflecting on her time in Bangkok, Erika shared how the experience helped her grow in confidence and resilience. “I’ve learned how important it is to take on challenges and solve problems. And I’ll never forget the support of my friends and teachers here.”

Erika also shared a message for other students who are considering joining an exchange programme: “Be thankful. Try everything with an open heart. And don’t worry—there’s always someone to help.”

As Erika returns to Japan, she says what she’ll miss most are her friends, the core values, and the “Great Heart” of King’s Bangkok. “It’s something I’ll take with me,” she said. “I hope we see each other again one day.”
