Artist in Residence 2026: Textile Stories with Mariem Thidarat Chantachua

King’s Bangkok was proud to welcome Mariem Thidarat Chantachua as our Artist in Residence 2026. Known for her distinctive star-shaped embroidery threads woven into geometric structures, Mariem brought both technical expertise and thoughtful dialogue to our studios.

Over two immersive weeks, students engaged deeply with textile processes, exploring marbling, ice-bath tie-dye, batik painting and intricate embroidery. More importantly, they were able to learn with Mariem rather than simply about her practice. Through discussion, questioning and direct feedback, students developed their understanding of material exploration, symbolism and cultural narrative. Conversations around her artistic decisions, influences and personal journey gave students valuable insight into the mindset and discipline required to sustain a contemporary practice.

Having Mariem’s own artworks exhibited within our art space transformed the residency into a truly bespoke experience. Students were able to study her pieces up close, analyse stitch quality, layering, composition, and conceptual intent, and then immediately apply that learning to their own outcomes. This proximity to professional work elevated their critical thinking, technical refinement and confidence in experimentation.

The residency was not only a celebration of textile processes but a meaningful opportunity for artistic growth, dialogue and creative development. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mariem for the generosity, inspiration and depth of learning she brought to King’s Bangkok.
