King’s College International School Bangkok encourages strong literacy and communication skills among our students, stretching them by practicing many text types, such as poetry. Kenn Nesbitt, American poet and 2013 Children’s Poet Laureate, spoke to the Year 5s and 6s about his inspiration for writing poetry. He was engaging, funny and he helped to show the children how to write funny, alliterative and rhyming poetry before ending the workshop with an exciting Q&A session.

Drawing from their Kenn Nesbitt inspiration and any other work they have been doing, Year 5 and 6 students then created their own poems and shortlisted pairs from each class were then selected for the final of an internal poetry competition. Every student had to perform their poems to their class, reciting them clearly and expressing their creativity through figurative language, vocabulary used, rhythm and rhyme. Finalists then recited their work for Years 5 and 6 in the Great Hall.

It has been brilliant to, as always, see King’s students so ready to try new things, like writing poems in English with many different techniques. We are proud of the children for being confident to perform their pieces and cannot wait to hear more about what they accomplish in the new year.

โรงเรียนนานาชาติคิงส์คอลเลจกรุงเทพ ส่งเสริมทักษะการสื่อสาร และการเขียนอ่านของนักเรียนทุกคนอย่างรอบด้าน โดยเราให้นักเรียนฝึกฝนทักษะทางภาษาผ่านการเขียนประเภทต่าง ๆ อย่างบทกวี เป็นต้น และในครั้งนี้เราได้รับเกียรติจาก เคนน์ เนสบิทท์ นักกวีชาวอเมริกัน ผู้ได้รับรางวัล Children’s Poet Laureate (กวีเยาวชนราชสำนัก) ปี 2013 มาพูดคุยกับนักเรียน Year 5 และ Year 6 ของเราผ่านทางออนไลน์ เขาได้เล่าถึงแรงบันดาลใจต่าง ๆ ในการแต่งบทกวี ซึ่งเป็นชั่วโมงที่เด็ก ๆ ได้สนุกสนานและได้รับแรงบันดาลใจอย่างมาก เพราะด้วยความเป็นคนสนุกสนานเคนน์จึงสามารถเข้าถึงเด็ก ๆ ได้ นอกจากนี้เขายังได้สอนให้เด็ก ๆ แต่งบทกลอนสนุก ๆ เชิงเปรียบเทียบที่มีความคล้องจองกัน ก่อนจะปิดท้ายด้วยการเปิดโอกาสให้นักเรียนถามในสิ่งที่พวกเขาสงสัย

หลังจากที่นักเรียนของเราได้แรงบันดาลใจในการแต่งบทกลอนจากเคนน์ เนสบิทท์ ประกอบกับได้ลองลงมือเขียนงานของตัวเองแล้ว เราได้จัดกิจกรรม Poetry Competition โดยให้นักเรียน Year 5 และ Year 6 เขียนบทกลอนที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นเองในชั้นเรียน โดยคัดเลือกนักเรียนจากทุกห้องที่สามารถแต่งกลอนผ่านการใช้ภาษา คำศัพท์ สัมผัส และท่วงทำนองได้อย่างสร้างสรรค์ มาอ่านบทกวีในการคัดเลือกรอบสุดท้ายที่ The Great Hall ของเรา

คิงส์คอลเลจกรุงเทพรู้สึกยินดีอย่างยิ่งที่ได้เห็นเด็ก ๆ ได้ลองทำสิ่งใหม่ ๆ อย่างการเขียนบทกลอนด้วยเทคนิคที่หลากหลายเช่นนี้ เรารู้สึกภาคภูมิใจที่เด็ก ๆ มีความมั่นใจที่จะแสดงผลงานของตัวเองต่อหน้าเพื่อน ๆ และเราหวังว่าจะได้เห็นพวกเขาได้ลองทำสิ่งใหม่ ๆ ต่อไปในวันข้างหน้า
