What are some secrets to help my child improve their concentration while learning online?

As part of "WeCare & WeShare" campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic, King’s Bangkok’s Head of Pre-prep, Helen Searle, shares her thoughts below in response to this popular question regarding online learning.

“To help your child concentrate while learning online, you should try to ensure that your child has a quiet room to work in, away from distractions such as the television and other children playing. Keep an eye on your child to ensure that they are concentrating, but there's no need to sit and watch over them unless they are very young.”

“It is not advisable to have your child sit in front of a computer for too long, so break up the online lessons with some physical activities and practical, creative activities such as baking; something that your child enjoys doing, this helps with concentration during online learning. If your child can go outside to run around or even go for a swim, this helps with concentration during online learning.

You must also keep in mind that at school, children do not sit and concentrate for long periods of time. They will move around, talk to their friends and have short breaks, so do not expect them to concentrate on an online lesson for too long. A child can usually concentrate for a number of minutes two to three times their age, depending on the child. A six-year-old can therefore concentrate for a maximum of 18 minutes when they are interested. Having clear expectations and giving praise and rewards can go a long way to helping your child concentrate.”
