How can my child be happy while doing online learning?

This is one of the most common questions we have received in the last few days. As part of the "WeCare & WeShare" campaign during COVID-19, King’s College International School Bangkok, led by Headmaster Thomas Banyard and Head of Pre-prep Helen Searle, offers wellbeing guidance to address some of the most common concerns due to the abrupt changes caused by the pandemic.

To keep children happy and motivated, their learning environment is critical. The ideal environment for children focusses on two aspects: practical and emotional.

Practical: children should have a flat surface. They need lots of light and have distractions (like photographs or tokens) removed. They should work somewhere that is quiet, but still allows parents to walk through the room to check their work and offer support where needed.

Emotional: children give their best when they feel safe, secure and celebrated. As parents, you can make them feel safe by setting clear boundaries (like no online gaming, and giving specific times for using a screen). Just as importantly, you can make them feel celebrated by asking them about their work, praising their efforts and endeavours, and asking them to explain their work to you.

We know that parents make a huge difference to the quality of a child’s online learning and everything you do will both help your children in their studies and work to build even stronger bonds between you and them.
